The Last Waltz was the farewell concert by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, held on Thanksgiving-Nov. 25, 1976-at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.

It included performances by unprecedented special guests including Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, the Staple Singers, Muddy Waters, and more…

The concert was filmed by legendary director Martin Scorsese, who made it into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. Scorsese treated the concert like a major feature film, using legendary cinematographers and shooting in 35mm.

It features performances, intermittent song renditions shot on a soundstage, and interviews with members of The Band.
The Last Waltz acts as a time capsule for a golden era of rock and roll history, balancing triumphant performances with bittersweet melancholic goodbyes from musical icons.
In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
