Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is an animated reboot of the popular action franchise from producers (and lifelong TMNT fans) Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Here once again are the strangest ever comic-book heroes; mutant masked underground crime-fighting turtles with a love of pizza and the names of Renaissance artists, rallying around a desire to be accepted and loved by humans. This new animated origin story for the reptilian fighters is unexpectedly funny.
Mutant Mayhem’s art style is perfectly suited to the crackling energy that drives the story forward. The unique characters interact with a comparatively realistic New York, and the relationship between the elasticity of the character animation and the more logic-based digital cinematography is a constant reminder of the ways the Turtles stick out in society. Its killer visuals are pushed along by an absolutely tremendous musical score, from the Oscar-winning Nine Inch Nails team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It elevates the action and emotion at every turn.
The infectious, talky banter the 15-year-old brothers generate amongst themselves and others is effortless and quotable, with an unpredictable dark streak that ensures laughs from all age groups. The diverse voice cast includes strong performances by Jackie Chan, Ayo Edebiri, Ice Cube, and many others. With clear themes of teamwork, brotherhood, courage, and curiosity, this is a refreshingly all-ages adventure that should appeal to kid and adult TMNT devotees alike. Screenwriters Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Jeff Rowe, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit have impressively captured how 15-year-old boys talk, tease, and act.
